Fun Facts about Our Area
 
In 1888 Andrew McNally, co-founder of Rand McNally Publishing Company, bought the 2300 acres that we now know as Cerritos, La Mirada, Stanton, and Buena Park. McNally was the last private owner of that land and is considered the founder of La Mirada.
 
In 1901, McNally turned his agricultural companies, The McNally Olive Oil Company and Windermere Ranch, over to his daughter Nannie and her husband Edwin Neff. For 40 years, Windermere Ranch was best known for providing some of the best olive oil and citrus fruit in the U.S.
 
La Mirada was incorporated on March 23, 1960, as Mirada Hills. “Proposition T” was introduced in the November elections of that year to change the name back to La Mirada. Prop T won by an 80% vote and La Mirada became the first city in the country to have its name changed by its citizens.
